Functional Skills
Apparently, you have yet to sit your level 2 functional skills exam. You have passed your level 1 but not your level 2. Could you please come in and speak to exams (MIS) about arranging to sit the level 2 functional skill - i think it is maths.
I hope this makes sense?

Statistical Data Quiz
Interesting.....
Work on Drives
Furthermore, if you want any of the folders that you have submitted over the last 2 years you will also need to collect these - they are being disposed of .
Can you let me know via this post when you will be coming in so that I can be around - don't just turn up or you might be playing where's Wally.
Cheerio.
SRF Student Copies
All of your grades have ben submitted to Edexcel. You should receive in the next couple of days a pink student copy of the SRF (Student Results Form; or something like that) and these are the final grades for each unit you have conducted.
I've noticed on a couple of the forms that i gave to you the week before we left for Manchester that there were a few typos - not everyone but I these have been pointed out to me some of you and also people who have double checked them here.
However, the pink form that you will receive is correct, as i've checked it, double checked and triple checked it. If when you get your certificates through they do not tally with the pink form you need to get in touch.
Finally, 5 of you (Mike, Rob, Nick, Josh & Alex) may notice that i have written on your SRF - I added a unit. This is ok as you can import other units from other Creative Media pathways on to the Film and TV pathway - it's just that the SRF is pathway specific.
Any questions get in touch.
p.s. does anyone want to work on the post-production of the Manchester short film? I'm busy all of this week, but it might be quieter on Thursday and Friday. Then I'm only in the following week and then I'm gone. LEt me know. Amy, I will need to speak to you about post when you have an opportunity.
Cheers!

Good Journey and Good Luck
I didn't really think I had a suitable opportunity to say good luck/journey - I don't like saying goodbye as it sounds like I will never see you again.
Therefore, I'll start with the person who has made me laugh and scratch my head the most...Hassan.
Hassan, over the past year you have made me laugh more than anyone. Some of your videos are interesting and the remixes are some of the funniest things I have ever seen or heard - it should have been in the show Mark #Ibottledit. Good luck in Pakistan with the "village of the damed" and when it's done I would love to see it - make sure you do it motively.
Alex, I have been getting used to calling you by your real name but I still prefer Rambo. You have improved tremendously over your time with us. I have really enjoyed working with you last week and your effort is comendable. If you show the commitment to your uni course that you showed this week you will go far and will be an asset to any production - speak up a little more, don't be afraid to fight your corner and meet/work with new people as it will help you to develop.
Amy, I still remember when you kept coming in to see me and Mark well in advance of your course starting and I new then that you would be successful, as the desire to do the programme was evident. Low and behold you are now an award winning HE student even before you have started HE - I don't know how this is possible but roll with it. I really wish you would have stayed with us for another couple of years but I do think and feel that you have made the correct decision. Keep on showing that passion and desire and you will be a success. This week has been hard but if you look back (not just the week we have completed) you have single handily organised, managed and produced a short film for the whole group - I think you need an award just for that - you may have been put off producing but you have the people skills to make a good one. Good luck Amy and keep going.
Deborah, why on earth you are not going to HE baffles me. However, I'm sure you know best and considered your options throughly. Please, please, please promise me though that you will not give up, as I've seen time and time again students taking gap years and never going back - get back on the bandwagon next year (you can ask me for a reference). I remember you on Marks' level 2 programme - you were very much a theory person. Who would have thought that you would be one the most knowledgeable and productive people at using the 5D's - that's progress. You have a the mac for post but keep practising you camera as well.
The Dream Team, not including Hassan, as I think he had a transfer due to doing to much work. Therefore, Matt, Charlie and Seth.
Matt, only towards the end of the course did you become a filmmaker - why didn't you do this in the previous 18 months of the course - I really liked your short film. Your a nice guy and very likeable and one of the original Dream Team. However, your recent filmmaking achievements might mean that your membership in the Dream Team may not be renewed - progress. Good luck Matt and if you ever need anything get in touch.
Charlie, you have done my head in for 2 years and as of writing I hope the Stone Roses concert was good - I know you will be here, it's a pity I couldn't say that during class time. When you needed to do it you did it but I wonder what you could of achieved if you did it all of the time. You are pretty much the most laid back person I have ver met in fact you are horizontal. Take care Johnson, you definitely were the leader of the Dream Team and a good leader at that - if you had a plan I'm sure everyone would have loved it if it had come together.
Seth........good luck. Only Joking! You are a bit of an enigma, but funny. You were sacked by Angela, had the Ex1 for 2 weeks and returned it with no footage on and then when you were questioned as to why you had shot nothing you told us that "you had noticed that" there was no footage on the camera #Bonkers However, you were not a problem and you made me laugh on numerous occasions - good luck on your course next year.
Josh, well who would have thought it. I won't go in to details but you know what I mean. I'm really pleased for you Josh, I've got a big grin on my face as I writing this and thinking that he didn't even need me #Imightaswellgohome. Your a really nice guy and I'm sure you will have success in everything you do. Take care mate, you'll have to let me know how life pans out and enjoy Salford!
Rob, Mr Animation. Some of your stuff is so cool and I'm sure that your gonna be a big success at Bristol. Keep it up, I'll check out your you tube to see what weird and wonderful creations you are pulling from the depths of your mind - some really are head scratchers.
Chloe. Good luck at Derby I hope it goes well. I still think that the advert you did in year 1 is one of the best and most creative I ever seen - it stands out. I think through-out the year you managed and constructed you blog the best - others in the group caught up with you but yours was always the exemplar blog - thanks for being the catalyst to getting better blogs.
Lizzy, so quiet, polite and good mannered. You produced some really good theory work and the practical work you have produced has been getting better as you have gone along. I know you will be on the same course as Mike and Rambo so keep your wits about you, as the RLB (Rambo's Ludicrous Business) production team are formidable opposition. Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you at Stafford.
Mike, who would have thought that you would be going on to HE. You've told me before about how you didn't complete the course prior to my arrival but you've dug in and made a good decision to do it this time. It's been a hard slog but you've done it, and to a good standard at that - I know your pleased. Keep it up at Staffs and I'm pretty certain you will do well - you should consider the live stuff as the way you managed the team at the TORC centre this year was really good - possible career in Live TV? Who knows.
Louisa, I know how hard you've worked to get the grade you did and because of that you will be going to uni. You were really good on the Trent and Dove shots we went on, even though it was a tough shoot. However, I thank you for the help you provided me with. Good luck at staffs, keep working hard and you will be fine - take care.
Jack, most improved student in year 2 without a doubt - no argument as you were one of the worst in year 1. I couldn't believe it at the start of year 2 that only 2 preople had done the work i set over the Summer and you were one of them. Were you replaced by an alien life-form over the Summer as you came back motivated, hungry and also quite keen to do the work - WOW! However, you still need to work on the 9am issue. Good Luck mate.
John, I hope everything is OK. A very hard worker, someone you can count on when the chips are down. Mark always said after the music video shoot you went on with him he would take you on a shoot anytime because your hardworking and you do what your told - important qualities. I know you are going to pursue the Video Dodo (only joking) thing but I don't get it - probably because i'm old or just like good TV. I hope it works out for you and then you can come back and call me an idiot. I wouldn't mind that at all, in fact I want you to. Good luck mate!
Nicholas (Tania inspired), I'll be seeing you next year. Keep making stuff. I now you've got stuff planned over the Summer but keep working on the post stuff you've been doing - especially the colour grading as this is something we will be working on. Finally, get that showreel finished. Thanks for your help making a decision whether to go Hollywood or Gritty British Cinema on the colour grading of Dragonfly. However, after thinking about it can we look at creating a Romanian Post-Modern Cinema style grade as it intrigues me? See you in September.
I think thats everyone...Only joking Elliot. Elliot, where do I start...Your actually a nice guy. During this last week everyone that has known you for a very short while speaks positively about you - thats great! I still want to see this Zombie movie so when you do make it you will have to let me see it. Wherever you end up (Australia, West Coast America or Disneyland) I hope you keep making films - some of those short ones were great. Good luck and keep making films.
Finally, I'm not someone that really gets flustered or emotional (as you probably know) but, as I'm writing this I'm actually welling up - whether that's because I don't feel that I've had the best week and I'm really tired or I'm losing two very good friends (two of the best lecturers I have ever worked with and you should all feel very lucky to have been taught by these two people) or I just really liked you all and I will miss you - yes even you Elliot. Therefore, you horrible lot must of had an impact of some sort on me - I can confirm you did my head in a bit, OK a lot but it has been really good fun as well.
And on that note, as I wipe my eyes (can't believe this, I haven't cried since super Stevie Claridge scored the winner against Crystal Palace in the Championship playoff final at Wembley to secure the mighty Leicester City's promotion to the Premiership. It wasn't the goal, it was that I fell 7 rows forward and broke my ankle and 4 fingers in the process- I digress) all that is left to say is "Here endeth the lesson".
See you around!

Outstanding theory work - everyone please read!
However, please check that this list corresponds with your records and speak to me if you have uploaded work and I have missed it.
MOST IMPORTANTLY - if your work is showing as 'private' I cannot access this to mark it so you will need to check this (these issues are highlighted on the list). I know some of you are having problems with this but have another look at your settings.
Well done to those of you complete or 'almost complete' - time is running out!

RE: Manchester Deposits

Deposit refunds
I'd like to add that Chris paid the full amount after he spoke to the group as everyone seemed keen to go and assured him that they wanted to go. Obviously, we understand that there are certain circumstances where people must drop out but if people begin to drop out en masse with no real reason then that is very disappointing.
As I say, the decision regarding deposit refunds will be decided next week but be aware that Chris has paid a lot of money for this trip [he cancelled a photography show] and £50 covers a small fraction of what the trip is costing.
On another note, we need to be far more proactive in organising the shoot - we aren't making enough progress at the moment and it seems that there is a general lack of enthusiasm. This is a fantastic opportunity - use it!

"I'm looking at showing the "lamestream News" organizations dodging the real questions, reporting on issues that don't really matter. Would be good to show "shadowy figures in the background as puppeteers and the media as puppets.
Could also show the people (puppets sitting in darkness/expressionless....)
We then see "anonymous" ZeN peeps gathering news from obscure sites that have 100% authenticated information
The promo could also show kids writing/taking pics via phones & texting info all from around the globe then it lands on ZeN's desk who then re-distribute the info in it's various forms via our website (ZeN411.co.uk),internet/workshop.
ZeN's aim is to "show people what they didn't know they didn't know"

Risk, Money, Craft & Collaboration
Some of you have mentioned that you found the Coppola quote on themes inspirational....here is the article it was taken from
http://the99percent.com/articles/6973/Francis-Ford-Coppola-On-Risk-Money-Craft-Collaboration
"An essential element of any art is risk. If you don’t take a risk then how are you going to make something really beautiful, that hasn’t been seen before?"
Thursday, 1 March 2012
Themes
"Eh? What's a theme????"
Themes are so important in film, television, novels, etc. etc. Get that right and you'll be okay....
I've shared this powerpoint on themes and subtext...it contains some fairly straightforward examples (Lord of the Rings, Twilight) but hopefully you will find it beneficial
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9hn1oU4BLukZTBDNFFGRFFTVW1HWkFaY1dWelFjUQ
"When you make a movie, always try to discover what the theme of the movie is in one or two words. Every time I made a film, I always knew what I thought the theme was, the core, in one word. In “The Godfather,” it was succession. In “The Conversation,” it was privacy. In “Apocalypse,” it was morality.... knowing the theme helps you make a decision when you’re not sure which way to go"
- Francis Ford Coppola
The Test!!!!! Aaaaaaarrrrggggggggghhhhh!!!!
The film will be screened at 10am.
You will then have 13.15 - 15.00 and then 15.15 to 16.00 to write your response.
You will be expected to use other examples of single camera productions in your writing and also use images to enhance it - the internet can be used for these purposes. However, you are not to copy and paste essays/literature
You can take notes whilst watching the film and you can bring these notes into the classroom. You can bring published literature in. You can go to the library and get some books out if you want. However, no mobile phones or storage devices.
As it is an academic form of writing you will also need to make sure you reference your sources using Harvard Referencing. You can use this link regarding how to reference using Harvard:
http://library.leeds.ac.uk/referencing-harvard#website
You need to specifically focus on:
Narrative Structure: Non/Linear, Flashback, Non/Realist, Open/closed ending
Technical Aspects:Camera Techniques, Lighting, sound and editing

That was a mistake...
a list of Best Picture winners that probably shouldn't have won...thoughts?

So, the big question is: will The Artist be added to this list one day? Did the oscars drop the ball (again)?
Best Film
Drive (not even nominated!?!?), Tree of Life (arguably the most ambitious film of the year, regardless of what you think of it), Hugo, Beginners, The Descendents, Shame...
Best Actor
did The Artist contain the best male performance of 2011 (over michael fassbender, andy serkis, ryan gosling, brad pitt, gary oldman, george clooney, etc).
Best Director
was that the film that contained the best direction of 2011?
I know what i think....what about you?

We all love sequels....right?
Anyway, the film currently has 24,000 views, which is astounding...it goes to show how good student films can be and the talent you can find on display at festivals such as Exposures
Upon noticing 'Heartstrings' on the main page, I looked at the filmmakers page to see what they have been up to and noticed a new film...it appears to be a sequel (oh no!!!!)
What do you think people?

Manchester trip
The Story
We are giving the group the opportunity to create the story for our short. Therefore, we would like you all to produce an idea for a script...the story can be about anything - but be realistic! It is unlikely that we will be able to stage a police shoot out and we only have 3 full days to shoot it!
Paul and I are in agreement that a simple story is best, with one or two main characters. If you are struggling to make a start on your story, consider things that are happening around you - friends, society, etc.
“A good place for you to begin is to draw from your whole background of experience” (Linda Cowgill, Writing Short Films)
Key dates
23/02/12: Ideas are to be presented (informal pitch) to the group and discussed openly (feasibility)
01/03/12: Final idea/Script (this can be developed once picked, however)
Paul and I will make the final decision on which story/script we will be shooting in Manchester...
Cost
It has been decided by Chris that, due to ever expanding costs, students need to contribute £50 towards the trip.
We realise that this has changed but it means that people have to make a commitment to going and we still feel that this will be a great trip for the cost....

Crushing Blows Shoot
Thanks to all those who showed interest in getting involved with the Crushing Blows video shoot on Thursday. I took all the names and discussed them with Paul and Lindsay.
Both Paul and Lindsay felt that the student who has worked hardest, and will therefore be joining the crew, is...Alex Gilbert
Well done Alex! Will see you Thursday
Secondly:
Kate Atchison, who is producing the Crushing Blows music video, has written a note for those involved in the shoot...
"Hi Guys!
Before we embark on this project, I just wanted to suggest a few things that you may want to bring with you over the two days. And also give you some basic information about the locations.
Wednesday - Meet outside college at 7am
On the first day we will be filming at Pooles Cavern in Buxton (01298 26978). There is no reception for mobile phones in the caves so this would be the contact telephone number in case of an emergency. My mobile number is 07532 130309 and I will have my phone with me at all times as an alternative contact number.
The caves are 2 million years old and have many protected rare natural rock formations. For this reason we are very lucky to have been granted access to restricted areas of natural beauty and need to bear in mind that we should act in accordance with the strict health and safety policy of the cavern manager Alan.
The caves are quite drippy and so I would advise you to wear sturdy footwear such as boots/wellies with a good grip/ walking shoes and warm layers that you can add or take off depending on the temperature. At some points we will be 200ft underground and it is pretty cold when you are standing about, a waterproof coat/cagool would also be advised.
There is toilet facilities and a small café at the visitor centre but I would advise bringing a packed lunch, drinks and snacks for the day if possible.
We will be leaving the caves at approx 17:30.
Thursday - Meet outside college for 8am
The second day we will be filming in Baddesley Ensor. This is a small village near Atherstone, Warwickshire. There will be a number of scenes filmed here and the general wooded areas are very muddy so please bring waterproof footwear such as wellies. We are not going to be near any shops so you will need packed lunch, drinks and snacks. WARM WATERPROOF CLOTHES ESSENTIAL!!
We will be leaving the location approx 16:00 (could be later, however).
You have all been assigned roles for the two days, which may change due to unforeseen circumstances. We do ask that you embrace your individual responsibilities as we are very tight on time and need to make sure that we are working safely and productively at all times.
If anyone has any queries that Mark can’t answer please do not hesitate to contact me on my mobile. If you need to leave earlier than the times given you will need to be collected from the location.
Its going to be a fantastic experience for us all to collect some amazing footage and work with the band on a video that will be used to promote their European tour this April!
I look forward to working with you all.
Kate"

Music Video - Crew Member Needed
I need an extra crew member for the second day of shooting on the Thursday (2nd Feb).
If you are interested, place your name below. Once I have some names, myself, Paul and Lindsay will have a discussion regarding who we think should go...
Deborah and Amy have been asked already due to the amount of work that they have done on Heritage this term.
The video will be quite epic in scope - with much of it being shot in a cave (see below).
The narrative will have a fairy-tale-esque feel with a Red Riding Hood type lead character who the band will serenade...
This is the track: http://crushingblows.bandcamp.com/track/i-dream-of-becoming-a-girl
Day 2 will involve shooting external elements of the narrative. If you are interested in helping on the 2nd Feb, post below...
Snibston Edit
Maurice has called a few times regarding the edit of the Snibston project - so we need to edit it as soon as possible.
Can you work on it tomorrow?
Short Film Shoot
You may remember that Paul and I also spoke to you regarding the filming of a short film in Manchester.
I have arranged for us to a have production office at Media City (the current home of the BBC), so this is quite a unique opportunity.
However, we must stress that this is not a holiday - it will be a working week involving long hours.
Transport and accommodation will be provided
We need definite numbers for this as we are getting the ball rolling...no maybes - yes or no please...
The dates are 25th-29th June.
Thanks,
Mark

CIQ Adaption
Please take about five minutes to respond to each of the questions below about today’s class. Don’t put your name on the form – your responses are anonymous. When you have finished writing, copy and paste your response to the course blog under the correct sub heading. At the start of next week’s class, I will be sharing the responses with the group. Thanks for taking the time to do this. What you write will help me make the seminars responsive to your concerns.
1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
The only difference is the addition of your individual learning style. The reason for this is to expand upon the pilot CIQ research. More specifically, I'm now looking at whether the learning style of an individual impacts on their ability to fully understand and interact with a session.
If your not sure what learning style you are I will provide you with this information tomorrow. Learning styles are either kinaesthetic, visual or auditory.
