Good Journey and Good Luck

It has been a hectic week - or was it all a dream/nightmare?

I didn't really think I had a suitable opportunity to say good luck/journey - I don't like saying goodbye as it sounds like I will never see you again.

Therefore, I'll start with the person who has made me laugh and scratch my head the most...Hassan.

Hassan, over the past year you have made me laugh more than anyone. Some of your videos are interesting and the remixes are some of the funniest things I have ever seen or heard - it should have been in the show Mark #Ibottledit. Good luck in Pakistan with the "village of the damed" and when it's done I would love to see it - make sure you do it motively.

Alex, I have been getting used to calling you by your real name but I still prefer Rambo. You have improved tremendously over your time with us. I have really enjoyed working with you last week and your effort is comendable. If you show the commitment to your uni course that you showed this week you will go far and will be an asset to any production - speak up a little more, don't be afraid to fight your corner and meet/work with new people as it will help you to develop.

Amy, I still remember when you kept coming in to see me and Mark well in advance of your course starting and I new then that you would be successful, as the desire to do the programme was evident. Low and behold you are now an award winning HE student even before you have started HE - I don't know how this is possible but roll with it. I really wish you would have stayed with us for another couple of years but I do think and feel that you have made the correct decision. Keep on showing that passion and desire and you will be a success. This week has been hard but if you look back (not just the week we have completed) you have single handily organised, managed and produced a short film for the whole group - I think you need an award just for that - you may have been put off producing but you have the people skills to make a good one. Good luck Amy and keep going.

Deborah, why on earth you are not going to HE baffles me. However, I'm sure you know best and considered your options throughly. Please, please, please promise me though that you will not give up, as I've seen time and time again students taking gap years and never going back - get back on the bandwagon next year (you can ask me for a reference). I remember you on Marks' level 2 programme - you were very much a theory person. Who would have thought that you would be one the most knowledgeable and productive people at using the 5D's - that's progress. You have a the mac for post but keep practising you camera as well.

The Dream Team, not including Hassan, as I think he had a transfer due to doing to much work. Therefore, Matt, Charlie and Seth.

Matt, only towards the end of the course did you become a filmmaker - why didn't you do this in the previous 18 months of the course - I really liked your short film. Your a nice guy and very likeable and one of the original Dream Team. However, your recent filmmaking achievements might mean that your membership in the Dream Team may not be renewed - progress. Good luck Matt and if you ever need anything get in touch.

Charlie, you have done my head in for 2 years and as of writing I hope the Stone Roses concert was good - I know you will be here, it's a pity I couldn't say that during class time. When you needed to do it you did it but I wonder what you could of achieved if you did it all of the time. You are pretty much the most laid back person I have ver met in fact you are horizontal. Take care Johnson, you definitely were the leader of the Dream Team and a good leader at that - if you had a plan I'm sure everyone would have loved it if it had come together.

Seth........good luck. Only Joking! You are a bit of an enigma, but funny. You were sacked by Angela, had the Ex1 for 2 weeks and returned it with no footage on and then when you were questioned as to why you had shot nothing you told us that "you had noticed that" there was no footage on the camera #Bonkers However, you were not a problem and you made me laugh on numerous occasions - good luck on your course next year.

Josh, well who would have thought it. I won't go in to details but you know what I mean. I'm really pleased for you Josh, I've got a big grin on my face as I writing this and thinking that he didn't even need me  #Imightaswellgohome. Your a really nice guy and I'm sure you will have success in everything you do. Take care mate, you'll have to let me know how life pans out and enjoy Salford!

Rob, Mr Animation. Some of your stuff is so cool and I'm sure that your gonna be a big success at Bristol. Keep it up, I'll check out your you tube to see what weird and wonderful creations you are pulling from the depths of your mind - some really are head scratchers.

Chloe. Good luck at Derby I hope it goes well. I still think that the advert you did in year 1 is one of the best and most creative I ever seen - it stands out. I think through-out the year you managed and constructed you blog the best - others in the group caught up with you but yours was always the exemplar blog - thanks for being the catalyst to getting better blogs.

Lizzy, so quiet, polite and good mannered. You produced some really good theory work and the practical work you have produced has been getting better as you have gone along. I know you will be on the same course as Mike and Rambo so keep your wits about you, as the RLB (Rambo's Ludicrous Business) production team are formidable opposition. Good luck and I hope everything goes well for you at Stafford.

Mike, who would have thought that you would be going on to HE. You've told me before about how you didn't complete the course prior to my arrival but you've dug in and made a good decision to do it this time. It's been a hard slog but you've done it, and to a good standard at that - I know your pleased. Keep it up at Staffs and I'm pretty certain you will do well - you should consider the live stuff as the way you managed the team at the TORC centre this year was really good - possible career in Live TV? Who knows.

Louisa, I know how hard you've worked to get the grade you did and because of that you will be going to uni. You were really good on the Trent and Dove shots we went on, even though it was a tough shoot. However, I thank you for the help you provided me with. Good luck at staffs, keep working hard and you will be fine - take care.

Jack, most improved student in year 2 without a doubt - no argument as you were one of the worst in year 1. I couldn't believe it at the start of year 2 that only 2 preople had done the work i set over the Summer and you were one of them. Were you replaced by an alien life-form over the Summer as you came back motivated, hungry and also quite keen to do the work - WOW! However, you still need to work on the 9am issue. Good Luck mate.

John, I hope everything is OK. A very hard worker, someone you can count on when the chips are down. Mark always said after the music video shoot you went on with him he would take you on a shoot anytime because your hardworking and you do what your told - important qualities. I know you are going to pursue the Video Dodo (only joking) thing but I don't get it - probably because i'm old or just like good TV. I hope it works out for you and then you can come back and call me an idiot. I wouldn't mind that at all, in fact I want you to. Good luck mate!

Nicholas (Tania inspired), I'll be seeing you next year. Keep making stuff. I now you've got stuff planned over the Summer but keep working on the post stuff you've been doing - especially the colour grading as this is something we will be working on. Finally, get that showreel finished. Thanks for your help making a decision whether to go Hollywood or Gritty British Cinema on the colour grading of Dragonfly. However, after thinking about it can we look at creating a Romanian Post-Modern Cinema style grade as it intrigues me? See you in September.

I think thats everyone...Only joking Elliot. Elliot, where do I start...Your actually a nice guy. During this last week everyone that has known you for a very short while speaks positively about you - thats great! I still want to see this Zombie movie so when you do make it you will have to let me see it. Wherever you end up (Australia, West Coast America or Disneyland) I hope you keep making films - some of those short ones were great. Good luck and keep making films.

Finally, I'm not someone that really gets flustered or emotional (as you probably know) but, as I'm writing this I'm actually welling up - whether that's because I don't feel that I've had the best week and I'm really tired or I'm losing two very good friends (two of the best lecturers I have ever worked with and you should all feel very lucky to have been taught by these two people) or I just really liked you all and I will miss you - yes even you Elliot. Therefore, you horrible lot must of had an impact of some sort on me - I can confirm you did my head in a bit, OK a lot but it has been really good fun as well.

And on that note, as I wipe my eyes (can't believe this, I haven't cried since super Stevie Claridge scored the winner against Crystal Palace in the Championship playoff final at Wembley to secure the mighty Leicester City's promotion to the Premiership. It wasn't the goal, it was that I fell 7 rows forward and broke my ankle and 4 fingers in the process- I digress) all that is left to say is "Here endeth the lesson".

See you around!

  1. Thankyou Paul aka Condorman.

This last week has pushed me further than I thought I could go, Ive had my blood sweat and tears...and more tears, defiantly, I was constantly learning but I made it to the end.I has not put me off producing as I can do it now anywhere, with no money. I have learnt that working behind the camera is my real passion, cinematography, so when I got the opportunity to escape for the evening to China Town I took it...as well as having some time out :) so its shaped me for the better.

This week was not a normal week, enough to make good friends argue! So sorry if i snapped at you or Mark at times.....it was just being in the stressful situation as i had to juggle alot of stuff :(

I also feel saddened as I class yourself, Mark and Lindsday not only excellent tutors but good friends and will miss our laughs we shared, 2yrs is a long time.I know the next two months will be a major drag before uni.

As for the film I will look forward to seeing the rushes and final edit....on a festival screen and I hope some of my own work too if it makes the grade. So we must all stay in touch- i dont go away that easily :)

  2. Thank you Paul!

It's been a really cool three years at college, I don't think I could have chosen a more hectic and fun course if I tried :D I'v changed allot since my first year in level 2 and without you and the support of Mark and Lindsay, I wouldn't be as successful in both the course and everything else I'v done outside of college as well. Even though film making isn't what I wan't to do as a career, media as an industry is the direction I want to go, and if I had not chosen this course, I wouldn't be where I am today and I wouldn't have met the fantastic people I have.

It's been awesome, and thank you so much to you Paul and also Mark and Lindsay, you've all been great tutors :)

    All the best,
    Josh

  3. Thank you so much Paul.

I have really enjoyed this past week of the experience of making a film and learning the ropes of my role as sound. It was challenging at times, but i pushed through and put my all my effort in to do the best i could do. Thank you so much for the past 3 years i have spent at Burton College, i could not imagine when i first started those 3 years ago being were i am now with the grades i am so happy to have, i could not have done it without the help of you, Mark and Lindsay, pushing me to do my best and achieve my potential. You all have taught me allot over the years. I will defiantly miss all the banter, Rambo is a permanent nick name now that i am happy to have.

To Paul, Mark and Lindsay. Andy too. Thank you so much for your outstanding help, you all have been brilliant tutors.

Thank you & all the best

  4. Thank you so much Paul, I'm so happy to have been a part of the course for the last three years, it's been such an incredible journey for me. You are one of the funniest people I've ever met, and watching you react to some of the crazy things that only could have happened in our class was hilarious. I promise I will go on to HE! and I can also promise I will be contacting you for a reference in a few months time :)

I'd like to say to Mark too, a very big thank you. You're honestly one of the most inspiring people I've met. You've pushed me so hard throughout three years, and I thank you so much for it, I've learnt so much. Like Paul said, in my first year, I only cared about theory, and it's definitely down to you that I can now pick up a 5D and run off filming with it.

Just quickly to all of the tutors: Paul, Mark, Lindsay and Andy. Three years is a long time and there have been some unbelievably crazy moments that I'll never forget - I truly see you all as friends, not just teachers. I hope we never lose contact.

Thanks to everybody involved in the course, tutor or student. You've made this experience what it was, and that is unforgettable :)

I need to go and find some tissues now, I'm in bits.
    Goodbye! X

  5. I couldnt write it earlier, but just wanted to say a huge thankyou Mark.It is always great to meet like minded people and your so passionate about film and theory and I admire that. You have helped me so much i dont think you realize especially with my confidence when filming.

I dont think ive ever laughed so much!!! So much my sides hurt and i cant breathe (mr wee wee is just one example!) I promise that Ill try not to jump into any canals In Preston.

Also,You have given me so many opportunities for filming-Heritage,your own music videos to name a few. It was unfortunate that filming the short film was such as stressful experience as we have always worked well and I dont think i could of got through the week without you on the main shoots, so thanks so much. I shall go on to take all that i have gained from yourself Paul and Lindsay and make my film. I know i can do it now.I know you will go on and do great things Mark. If you ever need a camera 2 or a cutaway queen let me know and I will gladly help out.

To everyone...what a week. It has tested us all but lets not forget how much fun we have all had together and I hope you all have the best time at university. Thankyou for all being there and helping me get through the course, I wouldnt of made it otherwise without my college friends... Thanks Andy for always being there to sort out any problem, you truly work hard. Lindsay Thankyou for being sane and pulling me back to reality when surrounded by madness and your awesome powerpoints :)

"And Thats all I have to say about that"

  6. Hi everyone!

    Excellent post Paul!

I share Paul's thoughts on all of you as individuals and I hope you all go on to great things. No point in me doing another post as Paul's pretty much sums up my thoughts exactly - the highs and lows...

However, I'll briefly say a few things:

Like Paul I felt very emotional last night - which is either because I was shattered or had to say a final goodbye to people. I'm now back "up north" but I'll be around Burton from time to time [probably for the heritage launch in July - got to see G-Man again! Wasn't he great?], so if anyone sees me in the street somewhere [hopefully not sleeping rough] shout me over for a catch up....

I'll miss working with Paul, Lindsay and Andy....great, great people! I think your group experienced the very best of Paul, Lindsay and I as a teaching team. Finding the right balance between a team is tough, as you all discovered in Tamworth, and it's been no different for us either. There have been ups and downs - we have always tried to do new things and sometimes they haven't worked [theory at the start of the course was one of my more bonkers ideas]. However, it's been great finding that balance as a team and this year we really pushed ourselves to put on the ultimate college course for you...

It's been an action packed year - heritage [ah, angela - what a character...i digress], trent and dove [what was that about? answers on a postcard], die hard [rambo was born to play that part....shame it had already been done twenty years before], music videos [the cellar was fun...let's forget about the cave, ha], Eden [crazy trip...my favourite moment was when Paul told you all off in the minibus - I'm sure you all saw me laughing under my hood! Btw - where is Elliot's edit?]....speaking of Elliot - I will never forget your story about that one time in Tamworth! Finally, the show itself - a brilliant night that celebrated all of your hard work. The blooper reel was brilliant ["it's useless...it's not useless"] - Paul and I laughing during the live show was a highlight [how did it take you all so long to figure out why we were laughing?]. Someone needs to send me that blooper reel - brilliant! Paul is right, the remix of a certain video should have been in the show - if anyone has it, I'd love to see it one more time...

It was perhaps misguided to attempt to shoot a film in the last week as arguments were bound to happen...tensions always run high when you're trying to make a film in a limited amount of time and without a budget - it's the nature of the beast [Amy you did so well to organise the film - we wouldn't have even been there if it wasn't for you! Well done]. All the madness is forgotten now and we can, hopefully, just remember the good times - you have been a great group

You couldn't write half of the things that have happened - it would be an oscar winning documentary if we'd have filmed it all ["all the gear, no idea"]...

This may be the last chance I get to post from this account as my email account will likely be deactivated next week....so I may contribute to any future blog posts via my other google account.

If anyone ever needs a reminder of my filmmaking rants - you can find them here:

    my blog - markdugganfilms.com

or if anyone needs a reference or anything - draczuk@hotmail.co.uk

I'll always remember you all...stay safe and whatever you do, do it motively!

    All the best,
    Mark

p.s. if you're wondering why I don't use brackets properly - it's because my number nine [see I'm even spelling out a number] doesn't work on my keyboard anymore ;)

  8. I just want to say a HUGE thank you to every one of you. Teaching staff and students alike.

I want to thank Paul, Mark, Lindsey and Andy for all the help, chats and laughs. individually your input has been nothing short of invaluable in so many different ways. if it wasn't for some of the harsh/kind words of yourself's and some of the students i wouldn't have even carried on completing the first year, let alone going to to uni. so i just want to say a massive thank you and i hope to see you all around at some point so i can properly thank you.

Just want to say good luck to Mark and Lindsey, i know you will both be missed by all us students of 2012. but i do feel sorry for the new students because there will be no Lindsey to help with theory and no Mark to help with edits, DSLRs or any more zombie films they make.

i want to thank you all for the help and support you have all shown me in the two years at the college. and i also want to thank you all for putting up with the constant sarcasm i have handed out to all of the students/staff over the time we have been together.

When i started college i knew i wanted to be in media but wasn't 100% where i wanted to be but because of meeting you all and threw the countless assignments and tasks and hours spent on my computer and all the support from the staff and the friends iv made i did decide to peruse the live TV side of things (so if it all goes wrong I'm blaming you all).

i think this has sounded like a BAFTA speech for to long now so I'm going to end with, a massive good luck to all of you its been a pleasure knowing every last one of you and i will miss the time spent.

P.S Dose anyone want to take Rambo and Lizzy off my hands as they have already told me they can't cook or clean and want me to do it at uni.

  9. Mark. What can i say, its been a great and hilarious 3 years. I don't think the name Rambo will be leaving me any time soon haha.
It feels only like yesterday when i started first diploma, sat in that weird art and design room lol. I never imagined i would be where i am today. I would personally like to thank you as i didn't get a chance to yesterday, for the help and guidance you have given me over the past 3 years, always pushing me to do my best.
I have so many great memories of this course "Screw the beard, we don't have time" and "you'll need the Avengers" will always be the top of my mind.

Thank you also for teaching me the ropes of final cut and using DSLRs, will defiantly come in great use in years to come.

I'll try and post the blooper real of the show onto youtube =)

I'll see you at the Heritage screening, defiantly going to see the final film =)

Thank you again Mark you have been a great tutor and also a friend.

It really has been a pleasure

    Thank you

    Alex "Rambo" Gilbert =)

  12. I just wanted to say thanks for everything. I am taking so many good memories away from college - many of the memories being of uncontrollable laughing fits haha. It doesn't seem so long ago that we were all at college on our first day, i can't believe how fast the past 2 years have gone. I've met some friends for life at college and i am going to miss them so much now. I will never forget Rob's amazing ability to carry out an hour long conversation in a mexican accent haha or Chloe putting together Harry Potter clips into stupidly funny videos, Mike and Rambo - i'm not going to miss so much seeing as they are on my uni course haha. But Matt and Rambo doing the "noooo" scene from Shawshank Redemption will not be forgotten. and of course the zombie video has got to be one of my biggest highlights - such a crazy and fun day!!!! There are just too many memories to write but they are memories that i won't forget. The past 2 years have been amazing and i just wanted to say thank you to the lecturers as well as everyone because it's been amazing :) Wishing everyone the best of luck with whatever path that they are taking after college. Keep in touch guys!

  13. Thankyou to everyone for your touching messages.

I'd just like to say that, despite all the highs and lows, you've been my favourite group out of my five years at college....I'm probably not meant to say that but nevermind!

Thanks to you all for actually engaging in the theory classes and a special mention to Matt McGlynn for being the most improved theory student ever - who'd have though I'd be discussing Lynch's themes with him back in year one?!

Paul, it's been a mad five years journey together! Thanks for all your help and support - I consider you a true friend and I'm sure we'll keep in touch (we still need that night out).

Mark, we've already had this conversation so nothing more needs to be said - just don't think you're escaping Burton that easily....!

Good luck everyone & keep in touch - I'm sure we'll be able to add you on Facebook sometime in the future... ;0)

    Lots of love xxx

  14. Thanks for these 2 years guys, it's been an experience I'll never forget! I don't regret meeting anyone in my course (except for one person of course), I know I nearly gave up on this and left, and I wouldn't have blamed Paul and Mark for giving up on me, but I managed to pull myself together and to be called the most improved student... It really means a lot. Thanks for everything and I hope we all see eachother again soon!

(I would definitely do this all over again without a second thought)
