CIQ: Posts from today 13-10-2011 and Declaration

Due to an issue with blogger (global) it is impossible for individuals to post comments on static pages. Therefore, until further notice, could you please post your CIQ responses as a comment on this post.

The CIQ documents are still accessible on the static CIQ page - it is just the comment option that has disappeared. Just Like Magic.

Thanks!

Dear participant/Student

I would like to ask you to participate in the data collection for a work-based study into the use of an electronic Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ).
For the purposes of this work-based study the questionnaire will be used to discover how you are experiencing teaching sessions. Its usefulness is underlined by the experience that student responses often differ markedly from what teachers have expected on the basis of their own feelings in the classroom (Brookfield 1995: 95-96).
The CIQ requires you to answer five questions that describe aspects of teaching sessions, prompting teachers to think about what is helping or hindering their learning so far. Your responses are anonymous and you are encouraged to keep a copy too for review at the end of the course and for your own records. You will be asked to complete the CIQ at the end of each class and are the same every week.

Brookfield began giving students a voice, in this particular way, in the era of carbon paper! But nowadays the facilities available to us include electronic mail and virtual learning environments. Therefore, we will be asking you to submit your electronic CIQ to the specific CIQ page on the course blog.

Your participation in this work-based study is entirely voluntary. Filling in the survey will take no more than 5 minutes. The information you provide is confidential. All of your CIQ responses are anonymous and therefore no participant’s names will be used. If you request confidentiality, beyond anonymised quotes, information you provide will be treated only as a source of background information, alongside literature-based research and potential interviews with other participants.

Your name or any other personal identifying information will not appear in any publications resulting from this study. The information gained from this interview will only be used for the above objectives, will not be used for any other purpose and will not be recorded in excess of what is required for the research.

Even though the study findings will be published in a Thesis, international conferences and journals, only relevant researchers will have access to the anonymous CIQ responses. These researchers will be bound by the principles outlined above. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this work-based study.

If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information please contact the work-based study researcher (
p.smith7@unimail.derby.ac.uk).

By filling in the CIQ (every occasion) you indicate that you understand its purpose and consent to the use of the data as indicated above. This is a completely voluntary request and should you decide not to complete the CIQ at any point during the work-based study, the data you have already entered up to that point will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation

Paul Smith, University of Derby Research Student

  1. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I felt engaged while editing as I found it interesting categorizing and viewing a large array of different content.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

I felt most distant when a talk was given about Harvard referencing, because I had already done it and so this talk didn't apply to me.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

Tips on editing probably, considering a freedom of how the structure of the edit could be composed.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

I didn't find anything confusing, It was clear what I had to do.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

Nothing surprised me this morning, and why should it? I find this question is the most irrelevant in concern to my daily activities.

  2. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

I felt most engaged when I was helping with the editing of the heritage project this morning. I knew what was to be done and it was quite simple.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

I haven't really felt distanced yet in class this week, I have done some work that was to be done and it was done.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

When the internet wasn't working and Paul told us to turn the mac's off and on again. It got it working again so it was helpful.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

I haven'tfound anything confusing or puzzling yet this week, all that has been done so far is continuing the editing the of the heritage projects.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

what has suprised me so far is how hard it is to do the harvard referencing, i thought it would be easy at first but it turns out that it is really hard to do, especially for a website.

  3. 1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

Looking through everybody's footage for My Life My Day. It was so interesting to see what everybody had filmed and how they'd approached the project, and I was trying to think about how to start my edit! I think it will be a rather stressful but interesting process.

    2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

During the harvard referencing, it was quite confusing and not very interesting all at the same time. But I listened and think I understand how to do it now, so it was worthwhile all the same.

    3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

Paul talking to my group for My Life My Day, and some things to consider when starting our edits. I'm quite anxious and excited to start, and him talking us through things to think about helped me think more rationally about sifting through all of this footage.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Harvard referencing was confusing, but all I can do is have a go and see if I get it right, and if not just keep trying.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

Looking through all of the footage. People's various, individual takes on approaching the task of filming your day was really interesting to watch.

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Again, the harvard references were complicated as I had no idea how much work had to be done in order to complete it properly and to a satisfactory standard.

    5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

    2. When I was not done my PowerPoint presentation from yesterday for today due to the busy teaching for today’s lesson
    3. The references was a very useful tip on how to get a correct reference on your research as this made me re-think as I had to re-do my bibliography page again with further research for the viral video
    4. When getting the bibliography from book instead of the net as I need to get a grab of research from a book and get good references to get my research in a good point to get back my main point which I like to do but it Is the way we need to do it was puzzling 1st
    5. The use of referencing on how we should do them

    4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

Although i think the referencing lecture was helpful, it was a little confusing. However, i feel i can easily learn from that and understand more from provided documents.
