Eden Project April 2012

Thank you all that have shown an interest in going on the filming trip to the Eden Project in April.

We only had a limited number of spaces on the trip, as it also involves photography and graphics learners. Consequently, we can only take 4 learners from the group with us.

Therefore, it has been decided that Amy, Charlie, Deborah and Elliot will be going on this particular project. We will speak to the four of you individually and discuss the trip further, later on this week. There are specific reasons why you have been selected to participate and I will discuss these with on Thursday.

Can you all please confirm that you are still interested in going.

I'm sorry that we were not able to take the whole group with us but we are restricted due to space on the minibus. If you have any concerns please speak directly to me.

I'm certain that as the academic year progresses there will be other opportunities for you all to participate outside of your classroom time (Manchester in June) in filming activities. New projects keep popping up and we will inform you when we have further opportunities.

Crushing Blows Shoot

Firstly, some info from me...

Thanks to all those who showed interest in getting involved with the Crushing Blows video shoot on Thursday. I took all the names and discussed them with Paul and Lindsay.

Both Paul and Lindsay felt that the student who has worked hardest, and will therefore be joining the crew, is...Alex Gilbert

Well done Alex! Will see you Thursday

Secondly:

Kate Atchison, who is producing the Crushing Blows music video, has written a note for those involved in the shoot...

"Hi Guys!

Before we embark on this project, I just wanted to suggest a few things that you may want to bring with you over the two days. And also give you some basic information about the locations.

Wednesday - Meet outside college at 7am

On the first day we will be filming at Pooles Cavern in Buxton (01298 26978). There is no reception for mobile phones in the caves so this would be the contact telephone number in case of an emergency. My mobile number is 07532 130309 and I will have my phone with me at all times as an alternative contact number.

The caves are 2 million years old and have many protected rare natural rock formations. For this reason we are very lucky to have been granted access to restricted areas of natural beauty and need to bear in mind that we should act in accordance with the strict health and safety policy of the cavern manager Alan.

The caves are quite drippy and so I would advise you to wear sturdy footwear such as boots/wellies with a good grip/ walking shoes and warm layers that you can add or take off depending on the temperature. At some points we will be 200ft underground and it is pretty cold when you are standing about, a waterproof coat/cagool would also be advised.
There is toilet facilities and a small café at the visitor centre but I would advise bringing a packed lunch, drinks and snacks for the day if possible.
We will be leaving the caves at approx 17:30.

Thursday - Meet outside college for 8am

The second day we will be filming in Baddesley Ensor. This is a small village near Atherstone, Warwickshire. There will be a number of scenes filmed here and the general wooded areas are very muddy so please bring waterproof footwear such as wellies. We are not going to be near any shops so you will need packed lunch, drinks and snacks. WARM WATERPROOF CLOTHES ESSENTIAL!!
We will be leaving the location approx 16:00 (could be later, however).

You have all been assigned roles for the two days, which may change due to unforeseen circumstances. We do ask that you embrace your individual responsibilities as we are very tight on time and need to make sure that we are working safely and productively at all times.

If anyone has any queries that Mark can’t answer please do not hesitate to contact me on my mobile. If you need to leave earlier than the times given you will need to be collected from the location.

Its going to be a fantastic experience for us all to collect some amazing footage and work with the band on a video that will be used to promote their European tour this April!

I look forward to working with you all.

Kate"

Music Video - Crew Member Needed

Next week I am shooting another music video with Crushing Blows...

I need an extra crew member for the second day of shooting on the Thursday (2nd Feb).

If you are interested, place your name below. Once I have some names, myself, Paul and Lindsay will have a discussion regarding who we think should go...

Deborah and Amy have been asked already due to the amount of work that they have done on Heritage this term.

The video will be quite epic in scope - with much of it being shot in a cave (see below).

The narrative will have a fairy-tale-esque feel with a Red Riding Hood type lead character who the band will serenade...

This is the track: http://crushingblows.bandcamp.com/track/i-dream-of-becoming-a-girl

Day 2 will involve shooting external elements of the narrative. If you are interested in helping on the 2nd Feb, post below...

Snibston Edit

@Nick

Maurice has called a few times regarding the edit of the Snibston project - so we need to edit it as soon as possible.

Can you work on it tomorrow?

However, we must stress that this is not a holiday - it will be a working week involving long hours.

Transport and accommodation will be provided

We need definite numbers for this as we are getting the ball rolling...no maybes - yes or no please...

The dates are 25th-29th June.

Thanks,
Mark

CIQ Adaption

From Tomorrow I would like you all to use the new CIQ template please.

New Template:

Critical Incident Questionnaire and Learning Style

Please take about five minutes to respond to each of the questions below about today’s class. Don’t put your name on the form – your responses are anonymous. When you have finished writing, copy and paste your response to the course blog under the correct sub heading. At the start of next week’s class, I will be sharing the responses with the group. Thanks for taking the time to do this. What you write will help me make the seminars responsive to your concerns.

Your Learning Style:

1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?

2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?

3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?

4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?

5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)

The only difference is the addition of your individual learning style. The reason for this is to expand upon the pilot CIQ research. More specifically, I'm now looking at whether the learning style of an individual impacts on their ability to fully understand and interact with a session.

If your not sure what learning style you are I will provide you with this information tomorrow. Learning styles are either kinaesthetic, visual or auditory.

Can I also add that both groups today were excellent and i'm very impressed by the progress both groups are making. Compared to last year you are both way ahead.

p.s. a friend of mine has informed me that they have a VHS (old fashioned Blu-ray disc) copy of Condorman.

I know you can't hold in your excitment but when i get chance to pop and see him i will bring it in and we can all enjoy the splendor of a classic non-award winning (it was robbed; way ahead of its time) movie.

Trent and Dove

Trent and Dove video needs to be completed by the end of the week.

That means a completed edit (in .mov format), end credits, titles and soundtrack where applicable.

I'm surprised that nobody has been in this week, prior to today, to work on the project considering that time is running out. I did mention on numerous occasions last week that the project needed to be finished by the end of this week.

Please make sure that the group has a plan of action to complete the edit tomorrow as you are at the TORC centre on Friday. The Trent and Dove group may need to ask for help from other individuals in the class.

I need a video to show to Trent on Dove on Monday. It is very important that you meet the deadline as you need to have feedback from a client in order to meet the criteria of the unit specification. Missing the deadline will not result in positive feedback.

Tomorrow - Richard and Ashley (director for Group B) have said they are in tomorrow morning for a discussion regarding the productions. You will also have functional skills from 2.15 - 3.15.

Furthermore, CHARLIE & NICK, you have a functional skills exam tomorrow. Do not forget to attend or you will be billed the exam fee.

Useful book for all you budding DSLR Filmmakers

I took delivery of an inspection copy (pre-release) yesterday. I've had a quick look through and it provides some good information in relation to DSLR cinema - it mainly focuses on Canon but also Nikon.

Well worth a read !

CIQ Posts for TEAM A Director

As discussed on Friday, it is important that Richard (your director) receives feedback from the team in order for him to reflect upon the activities on Friday at the TORC Centre.

I was contemplating adapting the current CIQ, however the questions are still applicable to the practice you are undertaking under Richard. Therefore, I would like you to use the existing one. Available here - CIQ

Richard has created a dedicated CIQ page on his blog and on Monday (probably by midday) he will have made possible for you to post your CIQ responses - please bear with him until then.

Richards blog can be accessed by this link - RICHARD WARNER BLOG

Please make sure that you all post comments, as Richard really requires the feedback.

Team B (Dream Team), obviously the director didn't turn up. If he turns up this Friday (13th) then the same procedure will be required.

Well done both teams on Friday you seemed to pick it up really quickly and the organisation by both teams was very good.

p.s. Week 2 at the TORC centre is Friday the 13th.

Live TV Studio Production this Friday 6th January

REMEMBER......This Friday you will be attending the TORC Centre in Tamworth, where you will be conducting your "Live TV Studio Production".

The bus leaves at 9am prompt so please be there at least 5 - 10 minutes before departure. The bus will not wait as we have booked studio time at the TORC centre. In order for everyone to have adequate time in the studio it is important that the bus leaves on time.

This assignment is very important as it covers one of your modules. If you do not attend you will not be able to achieve the unit.

The document about the trip (which has been given to everyone) is available HERE.

This document details the location of departure and also the timeframe.

See you ALL on Friday.
