Wednesday's lesson - 'Film & Video'
We will be watching part 1 of the channel 4 series, Red Riding.
Please read the following short article before the session to familiarise yourself with the themes / concepts we will be discussing.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/feb/28/david-peace-red-riding-tv
The article discusses the original novels, upon which the series was based, but also talks in some detail on the TV adaptation and its controversial subject matter.
Film Review assignment
This brief is now on the theory tab - apologies for the delay!
Please try to get this completed asap as we are moving on to a different module - "TV & Video" - in tomorrow's class.

Exposures - Best Director
Saw this at Exposures last week....the film won an award for best director.
The documentary is about men in India who choose to keep a moustache...I thought it was very good
The documentary is about men in India who choose to keep a moustache...I thought it was very good
That was a mistake...
a list of Best Picture winners that probably shouldn't have won...thoughts?

So, the big question is: will The Artist be added to this list one day? Did the oscars drop the ball (again)?
Best Film
Drive (not even nominated!?!?), Tree of Life (arguably the most ambitious film of the year, regardless of what you think of it), Hugo, Beginners, The Descendents, Shame...
Best Actor
did The Artist contain the best male performance of 2011 (over michael fassbender, andy serkis, ryan gosling, brad pitt, gary oldman, george clooney, etc).
Best Director
was that the film that contained the best direction of 2011?
I know what i think....what about you?

Breaking News.....

You of little faith who did not believe that Condorman was an iconic character in cinema history; even Pixar are aware of his greatness. Ignore the fact that he is portrayed as a "Happy Meal Toy" that nobody wants (I think Pixar may not have conducted their research correctly - take note learners) he has re-established himself as an A-list Hollywood superstar.
Check out this blog which states how loved Condorman is!

The short can be seen prior to the new Muppets Movie.

We all love sequels....right?
I was on vimeo today and, if you head over there, you may notice that 'Heartstrings' is currently on the main page as a recommended film (you may even notice that i posted the first comment. perhaps I should have done that thing they do on aintitcool news stories - "first! wahooo"....or maybe not)
Anyway, the film currently has 24,000 views, which is astounding...it goes to show how good student films can be and the talent you can find on display at festivals such as Exposures
Upon noticing 'Heartstrings' on the main page, I looked at the filmmakers page to see what they have been up to and noticed a new film...it appears to be a sequel (oh no!!!!)
What do you think people?

Manchester trip
Plans are currently being made for the short film shoot (25th-29th June)
The Story
We are giving the group the opportunity to create the story for our short. Therefore, we would like you all to produce an idea for a script...the story can be about anything - but be realistic! It is unlikely that we will be able to stage a police shoot out and we only have 3 full days to shoot it!
Paul and I are in agreement that a simple story is best, with one or two main characters. If you are struggling to make a start on your story, consider things that are happening around you - friends, society, etc.
“A good place for you to begin is to draw from your whole background of experience” (Linda Cowgill, Writing Short Films)
Key dates
23/02/12: Ideas are to be presented (informal pitch) to the group and discussed openly (feasibility)
01/03/12: Final idea/Script (this can be developed once picked, however)
Paul and I will make the final decision on which story/script we will be shooting in Manchester...
Cost
It has been decided by Chris that, due to ever expanding costs, students need to contribute £50 towards the trip.
We realise that this has changed but it means that people have to make a commitment to going and we still feel that this will be a great trip for the cost....
